His termination meeting had been quick—“downsizing,” they said. But it wasn’t just about the job. It was about his pride, his ability to provide for his family.
The cardboard box on the passenger seat held more than just his belongings; it felt like it contained his failures. His mind spiraled. “You’re a failure,” the enemy whispered. “You weren’t good enough. How are you going to tell Emily? The kids? What kind of man can’t even hold down a job?”
David’s chest tightened. The parking lot blurred as tears welled up in his eyes. He could already picture the disappointment on his wife’s face, the confusion in his kids’ eyes. The shame was suffocating. “You’re worthless now,” the voice hissed. “They’d be better off without you.”
